Richmond Royals Peewee
‘A’ triumph in Peterborough!
The Richmond
Royals took the road for Peterborough Friday
evening with the notion that they may not get the chance to play given the
pending PWGSC strike in Peterborough.
Thankfully, Saturday morning the young players woke to a full day of hockey
ahead of them…
The Royals dominated the ice all day. Defense was very
strong and offence was playing some impressive hockey. They played the way they
have been playing their games this past month. Skating, checking, finding the open guy, making good passes, using the
defensive players for wide open point shots, allowing the Royals to win
back to back games in this tournament.
After winning the first game against Barrie 3-1 as well as their second game 4-0
versus Peterborough (PCCHL) awarding Dylan Dziadyk (G) with a shutout, the
final game brought on a lot of anticipation and excitement. The Royals took the
ice proud and strong as they had all day, ready to face Peterborough (PGHA) for
the final game. First goal in the first period was scored by Patrick St. Jean,
assisted by Tyler Kerr and Connor Stewart. With this goal the Peterborough team quickly responded with a
goal of their own. Might this be a close, nail-biting
game?
In the second period Damon Burtt
came in strong with a power play goal, unassisted, to bring back the lead.
Finally, a nerve-racking third period about to end, Joshua Foran
skates out of the penalty box with :55 seconds left in
the period, picks up the puck passed on by Owen Kalter
to score the final goal with :38 seconds left in the game, for a 3-1 glorious
win.
The Richmond
Royals players, parents and coaches
cheered loud and proud as they won the championship!!! Clearly, the coaches
have the team working well together, and their confidence both
individually and in their teammates, allows them to know they can compete
very well against other teams in this league.
