Tournament Convenor Report 2008-2009

This year was very dismal with regards to our tournaments.

We have ongoing success with our Novice tournaments and again had to turn teams away- as many as 18 teams were turned away due to the popularity and reputation of our tournament at this level.

In saying this- it might make more sense to host 2 Novice tournaments.

We have been very successful over the last few seasons and may want to take advantage of the opportunity to possibly slotting the A or B side over its own weekend- I feel this would be a benefit to our association, we seem to be able to fill the Novice tournament year after year and not having to turn teams away would be a win win situation.

I think this would generate a lot more interest for the association hosting this tournament over 2 weekends in November instead of the one we currently host.

For unknown reasons this year it was a struggle filling teams at the midget levels, which is unusual, we have chalked it up to the World Junior games being hosted in Ottawa over the same time period???

Our Initiation tournament held in January was successful and ran with a full compliment of teams.

Again, this year, we were not successful in hosting tournaments over the March break- we attempted to only schedule tournaments at the very beginning or the end of the holiday but that did not seem to help.

We did end up cancelling our Atom tournaments and the Peewee A due to lack of interest.

March break does not seem to be an opportune time for hosting our tournaments given it is not a statutory holiday and parents are having to take time off work to attend-this may play a factor in the poor attendance.

We did try to revive our peewee tournaments this season hosting 1 over the Xmas and 1 over March break but due to lack of interest we were forced to cancel.

I am at a loss as to why so many unsuccessful tournaments this season other then bad timing with regards to placement of levels into the time slots chosen- hopefully next season things will be back on track!   J
